In case you don’t know me, my name Garry Hobart, and I am a candidate for District Delegate at the May 24 State Democratic Convention. I hope that I will be one of your three choices for male delegate.
Why me? Most every candidate that I have heard from is totally committed to the election of Barack Obama as our next president, and so am I. Many are serving (or have served) on County Democratic Committees, and so am I. Many are attorneys, and so am I. Many are and have been dedicated to community service, and so am I. What can I contribute that some of these outstanding candidates may not?
One factor that should determine how you vote is the need to have a balanced delegation. The party rules wisely require an equal division of the delegation by sex, and the DNC rules require affirmative action in favor of inclusivity. Following these guidelines, I would suggest that you give one of your precious votes to a young, first-time, dedicated Obama volunteer, someone who is representative of the millions of new voters Barack has attracted, a true believer in hope and change. Your second vote might go to an equally committed more mature community leader, someone whom you believe has special skills to contribute, or member of a group not otherwise represented. The final male choice, I submit, should go to a senior citizen with a great deal of relevant experience, the exuberance of youth reignited by Obama’s stirring message, and the understanding of the central role of a delegate-total commitment to the candidate and his platform, and belief that a pledge is truly a pledge. I believe I am well qualified for that third vote, and attach short bio to help you know me better. With so many boomers approaching retirement, senior issues such as social security, retirement income, and health care will be at the forefront in the campaign and the party platform, and need to be represented in our delegation.
Because I believe that we should keep the six District Delegate slots for “boots on the ground” Obama supporters, I hope that you won’t give one of your precious DD votes to people likely to be appointed to the Delegation on June 6th. One such is the President Pro Tem of the VT Senate. He should be on our delegation, is very qualified and an early Obama supporter. But there is a special class of Delegates (PLEO) designed for State-wide leaders, who can file for that position right after the convention ends, and he surely will be chosen should he file (which he can do even if he loses as a DD). Further, there are several delegate candidates running as a team. All that I know about are superbly qualified and would make great DD’s. But I urge you to consider each individually in constructing your balanced “dream team” delegation. If you feel both are qualified and satisfy the need for balance, vote for both.
I will be most happy to answer any questions you may have, either by phone or e-mail. I call your attention to my Ad in the convention program and look forward to greeting you there.
